ERENKÖY MENTAL AND NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES EDUCATION AND RESEARCH HOSPITAL

One of the most prominent features of the existing hospital campus in the urban context is the large grove with mature trees. This feature has made a lasting impression in the city's memory. Our primary goal was to preserve the natural integrity created by tall trees in this green area as much as possible and provide accessible open space for hospital users and the public. To achieve this goal, we positioned the buildings that accommodate the program along the periphery.

The presence of existing trees was considered the top priority in determining the placement of structures. Despite the density of the program, we designed the branches extending into the area for the proposed structures to be mostly two-story, with the idea of creating a perception of the complex that departs from the typical hospital typology and does not exceed three stories in height.

Among the trees, a light canopy structure extends in a winding manner, defining a shared use axis between the restricted areas for patients and visitors, as well as those who come for daily use.

This canopy, which includes the trunks of the trees, creates an interface that is sometimes restrictive and sometimes permeable. In some places, the canopy narrows to become a path covering, while in others, it expands to provide space for various sizes and functions of spaces located underneath. These spaces are designed as shared areas, such as a conference hall, workshops, a cafe, and social areas.

Among the existing buildings, those that need to be preserved are proposed as Spring and Rehabilitation Centers. Two of the mansion buildings are expected to be used as a museum and a cafe, respectively.

The locations of the new buildings were primarily selected in treeless gaps within the site and where the traces of removed structures were evident.

The service masses are positioned to support the perimeter, isolating the complex from the city and defining interior spaces.

The Canopy provides a controlled intermediate space, both enhancing the perimeter and opening up to the public with its permeability.
